A Student’s Award

  • May not exceed the statewide average tuition* & fees for similar institutions.


  • When combined with other gift aid and work-study must equal or exceed tuition and fees.


  • * in-district tuition and fees at community colleges; private college student awards are based on public university tuition and fees.

Selecting Initial Award Recipients

  • Financial Aid Offices at colleges select recipients.  To do so, they
    • select only students with EFC < $4000
    • rank students by need
    • move down the need ranking, identifying students who also meet the curriculum requirement


    • All conditions must be met for an award to be made.

Students who are Eligible:
(Initial Year Awards)

  • For initial year awards, students must:
  • be Texas Residents;
  • graduate from H.S. in 1998-99 or later;
  • complete recommended or distinguished H.S. curriculum at a public high school or its equivalent at a private accredited H.S.;
  • enroll at least ¾ time;
  • show financial need and not have an Expected Family Contribution in excess of $4000;
  • enroll in college within 16 months of H.S. graduation;
  • have fewer than 30 college hours, excluding dual enrollment and AP classes; and
  • have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a controlled substance.

Maintaining Eligibility

  • To continue receiving awards, students awarded their first grants on 9/1/2005 or later must:
  • meet program satisfactory academic progress requirements;
  • continue to be Texas residents;
  • continue to show need;
  • enroll ¾ time as an undergraduate;
  • not be convicted of a crime involving a controlled substance; and
  • not have a baccalaureate degree.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

  • By end of first year in college, must meet institution’s financial aid SAP requirements;


  • By the end of the second year and thereafter, must:
    • Complete at least 24 semester credit hours per year;
    • Complete 75 percent of the hours attempted; and
    • Maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5.

Award Tenure for HS Students

  • For students awarded grants on or after 9/1/2005, eligibility ends with the first of the following:
    • 5 years if enrolled in a 4-year degree plan; 6 years if enrolled in a degree plan greater than 4 years, or
    • 150 hours of grant awards, or
    • Receipt of a baccalaureate degree.

Associates Degree (AD) Recipients

  • Students who receive AD’s in May 2001 or later may receive TEXAS Grants even if they do not meet the H.S. requirements of initial award if they:
    • enroll in higher level undergraduate work within 12 months of receiving AD;
    • be Texas Residents;
    • have need;
    • have no controlled substance convictions;
    • enroll at least ¾ time; and
    • not have baccalaureate degree.

Award Tenure for AD Students

  • For students receiving 1st awards within 12 months of completing an Associate’s Degree, eligibility ends with the first of the following:
    • 3 years from semester of first award if enrolled in a 4-year degree plan; 4 years if enrolled in a degree plan of more than 4 years, or
    • 90 hours of grant funds, or
    • Receipt of a baccalaureate degree.
