Exemption Programs

Definition
  • Exemptions allow students to enroll in public institutions of higher education while paying a decreased amount of tuition or fees

Eligible Institutions
  • Exemptions can be used while attending
    • Public universities and health-related institutions;
    • Public community colleges; and
    • Public state colleges.

Who can Qualify?
  • Children of
    • Deceased/disabled peace officers, firefighters, public servants;
    • Deceased/disabled Texas veterans;
    • Professional nurse faculty;
    • Members of the military who are MIA or POW; and
    • Clinical Nurse Preceptors.

Eligible Students, con’t.
  • Students:
    • Who are Blind or Deaf;
    • Who were in state foster care and/or adopted through the state;
    • Whose parents received TANF for them for 6 months during their senior year in high school;
    • Who are valedictorians;
    • Who are dual-enrolled; and
    • Who play “TAPS” at military funerals.

To Qualify
  • Provide proof of eligibility to the institution.
    • If done prior to the start of the fiscal year, the student’s billing will be adjusted;
    • If proof is not provided until after the census date of the semester, student will have to pay, and then get reimbursed by the institution.

      • Blind or Deaf
      • Foster Care or Adopted through State
    • Tuition and fees for a limited time
      • TANF (1 year)
      • Children of veterans, MIA/POW deceased/disabled public servants (tuition and limited fees for 150 SCH)

      • Children of nurse faculty (tuition for 10 semesters)
      • Clinical Nurse Practitioners – ($500 tuition per semester for 10 semesters)
      • Valedictorians – tuition only for 2 semesters
      • Dual enrolled – while enrolled in dual-enrolled classes – decreased tuition (optional)
