Requesting  the Cart
  • Specify date, time, duration on sign out sheet
  • Specify classroom teacher and room number
  • Is Ethernet operating in that classroom?
  • What software will be needed?

Transporting  the  Cart
  • Cart must be picked up & returned by the user
  • Go slowly over bumps
  • Allow sufficient lead time to pick up the cart & prepare it for use
  • Two adults are required to move the cart – it’s heavy!

Setting up in the classroom
  • Cart must be within cable length of Ethernet plug & power
  • Connect ethernet cable in cart to wall plug or switch box, plug AC power cord into electricity, flip the cart on/off switch to on position

Using the Wireless (Basics)
  • Unplug laptops from cart and distribute to students
  • Students must place laptops flat on desk!
  • (No walking around with them or walking around class after laptops are distributed)


  • Ensure battery recharge at every 2hr -interval


  • Printing goes to a networked printer on campus (check with Instructional Technologist on specific campus)

Using the Wireless - Logging In
  • User Name: firstname lastname
    • Students must use first & last name as it appears in VISD system
  • Password:
    • Students use ID#; Teachers use regular log-on password
  • Domain: VISD


  • For Windows 98 machines, cancel the next Windows logon screen

  • Always instruct students to save work to designated folder.
  • Set expectations – remind students that they are to only access sites specified in the activity
  • Be aware of “Low Battery” alert – plug laptop into the power cord on cart, then replace battery
  • Push the button on lower left front panel to “lock” position to prevent accidental Internet navigations

Using the Wireless (Security)
  • Do not leave the classroom while the cart is in use
  • If possible, have a staff member, Technology Assistant, or another teacher assist you while using the cart

Repacking  the  Cart
  • Return each laptop to its numbered bay; plug power cables in to each computer
  • Unplug Ethernet cables and power off before the cart is moved
  • Document problems to enable proper troubleshooting by support staff

Class Preparation
  • Try exercises out in advance and have realistic ideas about what students can do
  • Prepare detailed handouts to guide novice students in the tasks you want them to accomplish
  • Be prepared to work with students with limited computer literacy and limited software and Web knowledge
  • Be Patient
